Matcha set essentials.
Our 3 piece Matcha set includes a classic matcha bowl or Chawan in Japanese. The bowl is wide and deep allowing the matcha to be fully mixed. The bowl is handmade from clay which is then fired in a kiln to set. Firing clay is the process which transforms the clay into a hard ceramic with the application of intense heat over time in a kiln. After the bowl cools, a lead-free glaze is applied and the bowl undergoes a second firing in the kiln. The resulting bowl is evaluated for crack and flaws. The high heat of the kiln often damages the bowls but sometimes creates hard to duplicate beautiful colors and textures
The bamboo whisk is called a Chasen in Japanese and is the essential tool used to mix the Matcha green tea powder into the hot water. The whisk is made from a single piece of bamboo which was slit vertically 80 times. Because bamboo is flexible, it is an ideal material to make a whisk. The bamboo offers the perfect balance of firmness and flexibility to work the Matcha from powder into a tea. Using the whisk is a balance of technique and ritual.
The bamboo scoop is also included as a bonus with this set. The scope is also made of bamboo and is the perfect complement to the whisk. The scope is used to transfer your matcha powder from its container into the matcha bowl. One scope is approximately 3/4 of a teaspoon. The easiest way to prepare Matcha is to mix approximately 1/2 teaspoon of Matcha in to a puddle of hot water and use to whisk to mix and dissolve the Matcha into a watery paste. Then add more hot water and whisk until a foamy top is created. The traditional way is to drink it directly from the bowl.
