A Chinese Gai Wan consists of a saucer, bowl, and lid. It is a traditional method of brewing teas. This Gai Wan has two surfaces: red and white. The red is unglazed clay with with raised dragons on the cup and lid. The white glazed surfaces show the true color of the liquor. The lid functions to keep the tea hot and is used to impart the tea aroma. Additionally, the lid allows the tea to be infused right in the bowl and decanted into another container or drunk right from the bowl. This is done by using the lid to hold back the leaves.
All gai wans are pretty small. This one holds 3 ounces of tea.
